While in the service, during a delicate cranial surgery in Brandy Station, VA, in 1864, he accidentally nicked himself & erysipelas developed. He battled the infection for years but it would eventually claim his life on Dec 9, 1871 in Philadelphia. His official cause of death was given as: "...a long exposure to camp life with the Army, Typhoid and Malarial fever, and the wound to his hand, received at Brandy Station, VA."
