     The 16th Infantry was located in the Cantigny sector, France at the time Clayton was wounded.
He most certainly would have been in the Battle of Cantigny - the American Expeditionary Forces' first test of WWI.
     The 1st US Infantry Division's nickname was the "Big Red 1" in honor of the unit's shoulder patches.
